OAK BAY AND THE ISLANDS

This is the Aquitania, our kayak mothership and the vessel we use to carry campers and their supplies over to the islands. The Aquitania now features a canopy to protect from the sun and rain.
If you would like to play Robinson Crusoe, we can arrange a self-guided tour where we can drop you off on Discovery Island or other island of your choice with all the equipment you need to camp. Or you can join one of our Kayak Mothership kayak-camping trips to other areas of the Gulf Islands.
DISCOVERY ISLAND CAMP-OVER. This 2 or 3+ day/s adventure will appeal to those who would like to be dropped off on a wild and unspoiled island while visiting Victoria. Discovery Island Marine Park is a great place to get away from it all and get in some great hiking, beach-combing and log climbing. And you can also tie this in with kayaking the islands surrounding (see picture below). In any event, the "camp-over" includes an eco-tour of the Chain islands Ecological Reserve while travelling to and fro this Island in our 45 foot cedar strip motor launch.
Discovery is the island shown at the top of the aerial photograph below. It is the largest island in this archipelago, all uninhabited, wild and natural. And as you can see from the maze of waterways surrounding, kayaking and marine wildlife opportunities abound!!
This Marine Park (the most southerly of the Gulf Islands) is located at the confluence of Haro and Juan de Fuca Straits. Your south- facing waterfront campsite on Discovery offers wonderfull views of these straits, mountains and adjacent islets, home to seals, otters and many species of marine birds. The snow-capped mountains you see in the background are the Olympics in Washington State. From the lighhouse on a clear day you can see not only snow-capped Mount Baker but Mount Rainier some 250 miles to the S.E.
Camping Equipment: If desired, we can provide you with all the basic camping equipment needed (such as a tent, sleeping bags, foamy. tarp and rope, stove pots/pans, dishes, cutlery, cleaning items, and first aid kit). At a minimum, everyone will be provided with water and a map with directions to explore the Island. It is good to take cel phone along for emergencies. Open fires are forbidden due to the extreme fire hazard existing on these dry islands. The campsite has tables and a pit privy nearbye stocked with the "essentials".
Kayaking Option; If you wish to include kayaking as part of your island adventure we can provide a guided day kayaking trip in and around these Gulf Islands before being dropped off on Discovery. You will be left on the Island until supper time on the next day, or whenever you wish to be picked up by our kayak mothership and returned to Oak Bay.
Your camping adventure starts with a ride in an inflatable to our Giant Canoe moored in the harbour adjacent the Oak Bay Marina. Some basic dexterity is needed to transfer from this inflatable to and fro the Canoe (we also use the inflatable to transfer passsengers and their gear and supplies to the beach on Discovery).
Prices are shown in column adjacent. Note that the park campsite fee is $5. extra and is payable on-site on the "honour system" at a pay box next to the campsite. If you want us to provide sleeping bags, add $15. per person. Unless otherwise agreed upon, you must bring your own food. There is a tax of 12% (HST) on prices.
